Albert William Zercher

May 11, 1925 ~ March 31, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old


Albert William Zercher, 91, of Spring Grove, PA, entered peacefully into God’s eternal care, Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his home in Spring Grove, PA.

Born May 11, 1925, in Littlestown, PA, he was the son of the late C. Stanley and Lillian M. (Yealy) Zercher.  He was the loving husband of Gloria J. (Stuffle) Smith Zercher and with whom he shared fifty-seven years of marriage.    

Al served his country proudly during WWII as a Private First Class with the United States Army.  He was a 1943 graduate of Littlestown High School, graduated from Gettysburg College and received his teaching certificate from Millersville State College.

Mr. Zercher retired from South Western School District in 1986, having taught elementary school for over twenty-eight years.    

Al was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA where he was a member of Men in Mission, was an usher, and member of the choir.  He belonged to the Hanover YMCA and the Harold H. Bair Post 14, American Legion.

Mr. Zercher was an avid sportsman, fisherman, was a faithful Penn State sports fan as well as South Western High School Sports and Baltimore Ravens fan.

In addition to his wife Gloria, Al is survived by his daughter, Wendy (Zercher) Nolt; stepchildren, Donald Smith, Timothy Smith, Diane (Smith) Hofe and Earl Smith; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A funeral service to celebrate and remember Albert’s life will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, April 9, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA, with Rev. E. Robert Burkhart officiating.  A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 1:00-2:00 PM, Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the church. 

Memorial contributions may be made in Albert’s memory to the Hospice Program of the VNA of Hanover & Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331.
