Dorothy M. Bloxom, 99, of Hanover, PA entered peacefully into God’s care, Monday, October 23, 2017 at Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Home, Hanover, PA.
Born May 26, 1918 in Bloxom, VA, she was the daughter of the late Stanley W. and Rachel B. (Truitt) Bloxom.
Dorothy graduated from Bloxom High School, Class of 1936. She received her nursing degree from Wilmington General Hospital, Wilmington, DE, and attended York College of PA. Dorothy worked as an RN at the Hanover General Hospital for four years, was a private-duty nurse for seventeen years. She was one of the first nurses to work in the ICU when it opened at York Hospital and remained there for 21 years until her retirement.
Dorothy was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA. She was a member of the Wilmington Hospital Alumni, the Hanover Hospital Auxiliary, AARP Chapter 2812 and the Friends of York Hospital Foundation.
Dorothy enjoyed travelling and bowling.
Dorothy is survived by her nephew, W. Michael Avery (Dennis Bandstetter) of Maitland, FL; and a cousin, Ben Truitt of Lubbock, TX. She was preceded in death by her dear friend of fifty years, M. Kathalene ‘Kas’ Bankert, by a sister, Ernestine Truitt Bloxom Avery; and her loving dogs, Tai and Buffy.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember Dorothy's life will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, October 27, 2017 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 West Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA, with Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 9:00-11:00 AM, Friday, October 27, 2017 at the church. Burial will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 28, 2017 in Parksley Cemetery, Parksley, VA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 West Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the Arthritis Foundation, 4811 Jonestown Rd #230, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
