Alvaro Alandete Bustillo was born on October 6, 1933 in Cartagena, Colombia, South America to the late Miguel Alandete and Mercedes Bustillo.
He graduated from the University of Cartagena Medical School in December 1960, and married the love of his life, Cecilia Pareja, on the 28th of that month.
