Harry L. Maxwell

March 30, 1926 ~ November 29, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old


Harry L. Maxwell, 90, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born March 30, 1926 in Moundsville, WV, he was the son of the late James and Evelyn (Henderson) Maxwell.  He was the loving husband of Phyllis D. (Dowler) Maxwell with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.

Harry proudly served his country as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. 

Harry was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hanover, PA, and sang with the church choir. 

Mr. Maxwell was a 32nd Degree Mason.  He was a member of the Scottish Rite in Bloomsburg, PA, and the Coalville Lodge 474, Sugar Notch, PA.   

Harry retired from Gulf Oil Corp after 25 years of service.  Harry and his family resided in Mountaintop, PA for 40 years, moved to South Carolina and then become residents of Hanover for the past several years.

Harry was an avid golfer and traveler, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his loving wife, Phyllis, Harry is survived by his son, Brian L. Maxwell and his wife Susan A. (Cox) of Towson, MD; and grandchildren, Lauren B. Maxwell of Cockeysville, MD, Taylor L. Maxwell of Lutherville, MD and Emily P. Maxwell of Towson, MD.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn A. Maxwell and a brother, Robert J. Maxwell.

Following cremation, a service to celebrate and remember Harry will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Homewood at Plum Creek Chapel, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA, with Rev.  Joel Hummel officiating.  Burial will be in Albert’s Cemetery, Mountaintop, PA at the convenience of the family. 

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the benevolent fund at Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331.
