Laura Menges Obituary

Laura ‘Laurie’ Elizabeth Menges, 66, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s Eternal Care, Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. 

Born January 21, 1952, in Abington, PA she was the daughter of the late Robert R. and Marie V. (Plunkett) Wright.  She was the loving wife of James A. Menges with whom she shared thirty-five years of marriage.

Laurie was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA.    

Laurie was a 1969 graduate of Upper Moreland HS, Willow Grove, PA.  She received a B.S. in Education and Special Education from Millersville in 1973 and her M.S. in Special Education from Shippensburg University in 1976.   Mrs. Menges retired in 2008, having worked as a special education teacher and instructional support teacher for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit for twenty years and then for the Hanover Public School District for fifteen years until her retirement.

Laurie was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and was a founding member and secretary of the local chapter.  She was a secretary for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit Teachers’ Union, a secretary for the HPSD Teachers’ Union, a member of the Hanover Hospital Medical Corps & Hazardous Response Team, the York County C.E.R.T., a PTVES member and volunteer EMT for two years with Penn Township Vol. Emergency Services.  She was a founding member of the South-Central PA Blue Star Mothers, and a former secretary, president and Blue to Gold Liaison, a V.F.W. Auxiliary member, a location and event coordinator for Wreaths Across America at Mount Olivet Cemetery and St. Joseph’s Cemetery, an associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #1032, and a volunteer with Olivia’s House.

In addition to her loving husband, James, Laurie is survived by her children, Charles Menges of Wyomissing, PA, James Menges of Baltimore, MD, Jason Menges of Fallston, MD, Jennifer Menges of Pottstown, PA and Lisa Menges of Hanover, PA; and six grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Lt. Robert R. Wright.

Following cremation, a visitation and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6:00-8:00PM, Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.  A memorial service to celebrate and remember Laurie’s life will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. Kathryn A. Schroeder officiating.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.   

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Laurie’s memory to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the American Cancer Society York/Adams, Attn: Memorial, 924-N Colonial Avenue, York, PA 17403.
