Richard D. “Dick” Crawford, 86, of Hanover, PA, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Dick was the husband of Patricia A. (Brown) Crawford and they would have celebrated sixty years of marriage this June.
Born in Hanover, PA, he was a son of the late Myrl and Tillie Crawford. He was a graduate of Eichelberger High School Class of 1950. He proudly served his country in the Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, during the Korean War. He retired from Met-Ed after forty years of service.
Dick was an avid hunter and loved to fish and trap and anxiously awaited the arrival of his Purple Martin Birds every Spring. He was a lifetime member of the McSherrystown Home Association, the McSherrystown Fish & Game, the Pleasant Hill Fire Co., the Pennville Fire Co., and the American Legion. He also belonged to the NRA.
Surviving with his wife are his children: Daniel Crawford and wife Annette of Hanover, and Linda (Crawford) Smeltzer and husband Robert of York, grandchildren: Abigail and Jessica Crawford, and Jenna and Jackson Smeltzer. Also surviving are a sister, Vivian Fuhrman of Hanover, and a brother, Myrl “Sonny” Crawford, of Chambersburg. Dick was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda, and siblings, Raymond and Laverne Crawford and Dorothy (Crawford) Allison.
The family would like to thank all the nurses, aides, and staff at Homewood at Plum Creek for their help and support during Richard’s journey. Also, many thanks to Dr. Eamonn Boyle at the Cancer Care Associates of York, PA.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 23, 2018, at Rest Haven Cemetery, 310 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. Elza Hurst officiating. The Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard Burial Detail will provide Military Honors.
