Robert D. Smith, 86, of Hanover, PA, died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Hanover Hospital.  He was the husband of Genevieve (Lookenbill) Smith with whom he shared 27 years of marriage.

Born April 21, 1931 he was the son of the late John Ross and Helen (Felix) Smith.

He retired from the Postal Service in Hanover where he served for more than 38 years.  He was also a real estate salesman from 1977 to 1985.

He was a member of the Hanover VFW Post 2506, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans - Hanover Chapter, the McSherrystown Home Association, the McSherrystown Moose Lodge #720, and served as a past-president of the Midway Fire Company.  He was a graduate of Eichelberger Sr. High School Class of 1949 and attended Pennsylvania State College. 

He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star with “V-Device” for Valor and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Robert enjoyed playing tennis, golf and especially playing poker with his firehall buddies.

Surviving also are 3 daughters, Jacqueline Lawrence and Jacinta Weaver of Hanover, Joy Nemec and her husband, James of Waynesboro, PA, 2 sons, Robert D. Smith, II and his wife, Robin of Louisiana, and Daniel F. Smith and his wife, Janice of Hanover, 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Dorothy Buffington and her husband, George of NJ and Joan Becker and her husband, George of Hanover, a brother, James Smith and his wife, Barbara of West Virginia and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, John R. Smith and Richard K. Smith and a sister, Jane Reese.

There will be no viewing.  Following cremation, a private service will be held at a later date.  Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to the American Cancer Society – York/Adams, Attn: Memorial, 924 – N Colonial Avenue, York, PA 17403 or to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
