William L. "Bill" Engelhardt

December 17, 1938 ~ July 21, 2016 (age 77) 77 Years Old


William L. “Bill” Engelhardt, born on December 17, 1938, passed away on July 21, 2016, at Hanover Hospital after a short but courageous battle with cancer.  

Mr. Engelhardt is survived by his son, Bill Engelhardt, and wife Susan of Highland, MD, and his brothers, twin Dick Engelhardt and wife Beverly of Fair Lawn, NJ, and John Engelhardt and wife Grace of Ocala, FL. He was loved by his two grandsons Luke and Jack, and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Flaherty of Sudlersville, MD, and Mary Frances McFadden of Jackson, NJ, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Catherine Ellen (McFadden) Engelhardt who died March 23, 2011.

Bill was the son of the late Jacob and Helen (Greene) Engelhardt.  He was a 1957 graduate of Fair Lawn High School in New Jersey and a 1961 graduate of Seton hall University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business and a minor in History.

Mr. Engelhardt was employed by the Social Security Administration for many years and then he worked for the Medicare and Medicaid programs, retiring in 1993. He was the national president of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Alumni Association (HCFA/CMS AA). In addition he was the treasurer of the local Hanover chapter of the National Association of Retired and Active Federal Employees (NARFE).

Bill was a lifelong fan of high school football. Since 1998, he had written articles and newsletters about the South Western High School Mustangs and distributed them to the players, parents, and fans for free. Bill and his twin brother grew up with a love of country music. Bill had an encyclopedic knowledge of all the old time stars and songs.

Following cremation, a service to remember Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.  The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m., at the funeral home.
