Charles E. (Chuck) Mayers, Jr., (76) passed away June 1 at the York Hospital.

Born in 1941 in North Wales, PA he was the son of the late Charles E. (Smokey) Mayers Sr. and the late Anne E. (Doerr) Mayers.  He was the husband of Jane (Mummert) Mayers with whom he shared thirty-nine years of marriage.

Chuck was a graduate of Lansdale Catholic High School.  He attended City College in San Francisco and graduated from Southwestern University with a degree in Business Management. He attended post-graduate studies at Indiana University-Bloomington and Arizona State University.  He was certified by the Commonwealth of PA Dept. of Education to teach Fire and Safety Education in trade schools throughout the state.

He served in the U.S. Army where he attended Engineering School at Fort Belvoir, VA, and was assigned to Presidio Fire Dept. in San Francisco.

After the service, he worked at Boeing Fire Dept., was Vice President and Director of Fire Safety for Miley Inc., and was a firefighter and assistant chief at Naval Air Warfare Center Fire Dept. (Warminster, PA) where he retired in 1995.  He served as Fire Marshal in Towamencin Township until retirement in June 2008.

He was co-founder and co-owner of Fire Protection Services and founder and president of Air Options, Inc.

Chuck was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover, PA.  He was a life member with 50 years service to North Penn Fire Dept. in North Wales, PA.  He served as chief of the department.  He was a member of Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Service (SAVES) and ACVESA.  He was a member of American Legion Post #14, Knights of Columbus Council 2551, Republican Club of Hanover, Int. Assoc. of Fire Chiefs, Int. Society for Respiratory Protection, Int. Assoc. of Arson Investigators, National Fire Protection Assoc., and Hanover Fire Museum.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children Michael, Brian (Heather), Colleen Hogle and Megan Henderson and 9 grandchildren (Peter, Kati, Ryan, Michael, Emma, Caroline, Honora, Bella, Shawna), a brother, Patrick (Diane) Mayers and sister, Caroline (Jake) Krause.  He is also survived by in-laws, Susan and Charles Botto, Diane Leonard, Joann and Jim Miller, Richard and Judy Mummert, Jill and Phil Poist and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by brother, William, and sisters, Eleanor and Ann Marie, son-in-law Jan Hogle, and beloved nieces, Kelly Poist and Barbara Bolton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA, with Father Ryan M. Fischer as celebrant.  A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc. 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.  Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
