James Alvin Frey, 79, of Hanover, PA, and recently of Jarrettsville, MD, entered God’s eternal care, Thursday, April 5, 2018, at his son’s home in Jarrettsville, MD, with his loving family by his side.
Born January 24, 1939 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late Alvin D. and Hilda M. (Lippy) Frey. James was the loving husband of the late Judith A. Frey who died December 7, 2015 and with whom he shared fifty-three years of marriage.
James was a 1957 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Hanover, PA. He was a five-year veteran of the United States Air Force having served his country proudly. Upon returning home, he took over as owner and operator of his family’s business, A.D. Frey, Inc., Trucking Company, until it’s closing in 1997. He subsequently worked for 5 Star International of Harrisburg, PA from 1997 to 2008 when he fully retired.
James was a long-term and active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA. He was also a former member of the Hanover Area Jaycees, a member of the Hanover Elks (Lodge 763), the Republican Club of Hanover, the McSherrystown Home Association and the Hanover Lions Club since 1972, , serving as president for three terms, and where he was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2014, nationally recognizing him for exemplary service to his club and the community for which it served. Following retirement, he volunteered at his local Food Bank and Red Cross chapter.
James was adopted at the age eight from the former Children’s Home of York and was honored to have served on their Board of Directors for several years.
James was an avid bridge, chess, and card player and was a member of his bowling league for several decades. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
James is survived by his daughter, Lisa B. Frey of New Cumberland, PA, and his son, Kenneth J. Frey and fiancé, Shawna M. Brinkerhoff of Jarrettsville, MD; along with his two grandchildren, Savannah and Keaton.
Visitation services to share memories with the family will be held from 3:00-4:30PM, Friday, April 13, 2018 and from 10:00-11:00AM, Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA. A memorial service to celebrate and remember James will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the funeral home, with Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. Burial services will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of James to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 4-C North Avenue, Suite 422, Bel Air, MD 21014, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
