Joseph Francis Smith, 82, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Hanover Hospital with his loving family by his side. 

Born August 21, 1935, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Bernard G. and Margaret S. (Riser) Smith.  Joseph was the loving husband of Phyllis L. (Smith) Smith with whom he shared sixty-one years of marriage.

Joseph was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country proudly from 1954 - 1956.

Joseph was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica.

Joseph was the owner and operator of Joseph F. Smith Trucking and Excavating.  He was a member of the Adams County Builders Association, the S.A.V.E.S. Fire Company (formerly the Conewago Fire Company) and the local and national A.A.R.P.

In addition to his loving wife Phyllis, Joseph is survived by his children, Lorrine J. Owen and companion Joseph Breighner of Rockville, MD, Sueanne M. Senft and husband Patrick of New Oxford, PA, Brenda J. Flaherty and husband Thomas of Hanover, PA, Patricia S. Gustafson and husband William of Hummelstown, PA, Melanie K. Staub and husband Michael of Hanover, PA and Jennifer A. Talaber and husband Douglas of Wesley Chapel, FL; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Jane Lawrence of McSherrystown, PA. 

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and remember Joseph’s life will be held 10 AM, Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA, with Father Joseph R. Howard as celebrant.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Hanover, PA.  Military Honors will be provided by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard.  A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 2- 4 and 6 - 8 PM, Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA., with a prayer service at 8 PM.

Serving as Casketbearers will be Michael Staub, William Gustafson, Thomas Flaherty, Patrick Senft, Joseph Breighner, Ryan Zeigler, and Thomas Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Joseph’s memory to the Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA 17331.
