Mary Borgia Sponseller

February 7, 1921 ~ June 27, 2017 (age 96) 96 Years Old


Mary B. Sponseller, 96, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born February 7, 1921, in Centennial, PA, she was the daughter of the late Philip S. and Edith A. (Smith) Wagaman.    

Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover, PA., where she was a devoted volunteer with the Bingo and Holiday Bazars for many years.  She was a member of St. Joseph’s Council of Catholic Women.

Mary retired from Doubleday in 1973 having worked for twenty years as a laborer.  She then worked at SKF for five years, retiring again in 1978.

Mary loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She liked quilting, and doing jig saw puzzles.

Mary is survived by her two children, Douglas N. Sponseller and his wife Linda M. of Hanover, PA, and Yvonne S. Markle and husband David L. of Hanover, PA; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia Krichten of Hanover, PA.  She was preceded in death by one son, Donald C. Sponseller, one sister, Angela Wintrode, and seven brothers, Victor, Mello, Francis, Finian, Fred, Dominic, and Alfred Wagaman. 

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and remember Mary’s life will be held 12 PM, Monday, July 3, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA, with Monsignor James M. Lyons as celebrant.  Burial will be in Annunciation BVM Parish Cemetery.  A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM, Monday, July 3, 2017 at the church.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Michael Krichten, Rick Krichten, Fred Wagaman, Woodrow Wagaman, Jr., Peter Stringer and David S. Markle.
