Bernard Joseph Hudak, 90 years old, passed away peacefully at UPMC Hanover Hospital on September 22, 2021. He was born on October 13, 1930 into a family of 12 siblings in Youngstown, Ohio. He lived a very well-traveled life as he served in the US Navy and US Air Force, right up to his retirement from the US Army. He then worked at the US Geological Survey in Reston, VA as a cartographer until he again retired from the federal government.
He was married for over 52 years to the love of his life, Joyce. Together they raised their kids and enjoyed their later years taking road trips around Lancaster’s Amish country. They also crossed the United States many times, ending up in either Disney World or Las Vegas. He loved golfing, woodworking, boating, doing puzzles, watching nature, sharing “pork chops” with his VFW buddies, and quietly enjoying his growing family.
He is a veteran of the Korean War, as well as the Vietnam War, where he captained a ship, facing numerous dangers. He was a proud member of the Hanover VFW Post 2506 and the Amvets Post 22 in Hanover, always enjoying his time with his veteran friends.
He will be missed by his daughter, Kathy Montgomery and her husband Benjamin of Hanover, PA, as well as his son Michael Hudak and his wife Kim of Catharpin, VA. He was also blessed with 10 grandchildren: Angela Lancaster, Amy Bowman, Amanda Albin, Catherine Cobos, Christy Keith, Zach, Francis, Michael, Margaret and Matthew Hudak, as well as 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, 11 siblings, his beloved wife Joyce, his great-granddaughter Reese Bowman, and 7 angel great-grandbabies.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA on September 30, 2021 at 11am with Father Miller as the celebrant. The viewing will be held in the Narthex with his family from 10-11am prior to mass. Burial will be at St Vincent’s de Paul Catholic Church Cemetery after the mass, with military honors by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard Burial Detail.
