Claire E. Eyler, 82, of Gettysburg, PA, entered into God’s eternal care on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born October 9, 1942, in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mary A. (Muldoon) Smith.
Claire was a 1960 graduate of Plainfield High School and attended Kean College.
Claire retired from the Lincoln Intermediate Unit in New Oxford, PA, where she worked as a secretary for 18 years.
Claire was a member of St. Joseph the worker Catholic Church, Bonneauville, PA, where she was a cantor since 1983, and taught CCD Classes
Claire enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, the beach, writing poetry and children’s stories, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She volunteered at Adams County Prison Ministry. She was a member of the Upper Room Prayer Group, the Red Hat Society, and danced with the Jitterbugs, she was also a member of the Hanover Community Singers, and the New Oxford Chapter of AARP.
Claire is survived by her children, Francis R. Eyler, Jr. and wife Melissa, and Melanie E. Eyler; and their father and family member, Francis R. Eyler, Sr.; 7 grandchildren, Michaela Eyler, Benjamin Eyler, Jeremiah Eyler, Jacob Smith, Abigail Wallen, Brittany Barocio, and Nikki Eyler; 4 great-grandchildren, Cataleya, Toretto, Xavier, and Jayden; a brother, Richard E. Smith; a daughter-in-law, Heather Eyler; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Matthew R. Eyler; three brothers, Peter Smith, Thomas A. Smith, and Daniel Smith; and a sister, Marilyn Malec.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Friday, May 23, 2025, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 12 East Hanover Street, Bonneauville, PA, with Msgr. Robert Lawrence as celebrant. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6-8 PM, Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, 66 East Hanover Street, Bonneauville, PA.
