Cletus L. Smeak

Cletus L. Smeak, 94, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at SpiriTrust Lutheran the Village at Utz Terrace with his loving family by his side.

Born August 21, 1930, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Harry A. and Ida V. (Kemper) Smeak.  Cletus was the loving husband of Doris M. (Garman) Smeak with whom he celebrated 75 years of marriage on January 1, 2025.

Cletus was a veteran and served his country proudly in the United States Army.

Cletus was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA. He was an usher and a greeter, and served on the church council for a 3-year term and the property committee.

Cletus retired from Utz Quality Foods with 34 ½ years of service as a route supervisor.  After retirement, he enjoyed his time spent as a bus driver for Rabbitt Transit, and as a faithful funeral attendant for the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 

Cletus was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 47 years, serving with the York Adams Area Council, the Blue & Grey District, and the former Conewago District.  He served as a trainee on both local council and district levels, earning the Silver Beaver Award and was a Wood Badge recipient.  He was also a member of the Eagle Fire Company, Hanover, PA.

In addition to his loving wife Doris, Cletus is survived by his three children, Dolan C. Smeak and wife Catherine of Frederick, MD, Brian C. Smeak and wife Teresa of Odessa, FL, and Holly M. Sorice and husband Tony of Hanover, PA; five grandchildren, Corrine C. Ybarra, Joseph A. Sorice, Tara E. Smeak, Jennifer M. Shupe, and Janis R. Sorice; and five great grandchildren, Natalie, Lucas, Brayden, Sloan and Banks.  He was preceded in death by a sister, LaCatherine W. Herman.

A funeral service to celebrate and remember Cletus will be held 12:00 PM, Monday, February 24, 2025, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, with the Rev. H. Lee Brumback officiating.  Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, PA, with the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing Military Honors.  Visitations and times to share memories with the family will be held from 3-5 PM, Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA and from 11:00AM-12:00 PM, Monday, February 24, 2025, at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions be made in memory of Cletus to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
