Doris S. (Baker) Sowers

Doris S. “Pickles” Sowers, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Tuesday, July 21, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born October 7, 1945, in Union Mills, MD, she was a daughter of the late Claude W. and Adelta (Lockner) Baker Eyler.  Doris was the beloved wife of Edward T. Sowers, Sr., with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. 

Doris was a graduate of Spring Grove High School, class of 1963 . She worked at Hanover Shoe for eight years, followed by BMY in York for 17 years, part-time at Dunkin Donuts, and went on to retire from Snyder’s of Hanover after 15 years of service.

Doris was a faithful member of Apostolic Ministries in Hanover, PA.  She was also a winning member of the 1989 Hanover Bowling Center League Championship.  Pickles, as she was so fondly known, enjoyed her dogs, Misty, Mattie and Lacey, playing BINGO, riding motorcycles, and traveling with Ed.  

In addition to her husband, Ed, Doris is survived by her children, Edward T. Sowers, Jr., of Hanover, PA, Peggy Keeney and husband, Jerry, of St. Hedwig, TX, and Rebecca Holmes and husband, C.W., of New Oxford, PA; four granddaughters; three grandsons; five great granddaughters; and six great-grandsons; a brother, Claude F. Baker, of New Oxford; sisters, Charlotte Lawyer, of Abbottstown, Betty Riley, of McSherrystown, and twin sister, Mary Croson, of Abbottstown; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Charles Baker Sr.   

A service to celebrate and remember Pickles’ life will be held at 7 PM Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, with Pastor N. Wayne Hammonds officiating.  Private interment will be in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover, PA. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 5:00 PM until the time of service at 7:00 PM, Monday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Doris’ memory to Apostolic Ministries, 955 Baltimore Street, Hanover, PA  17331.
