Dr. Jon E. Hart

Dr. Jon E. Hart, a cherished family man, lifelong servant to his community, and dedicated dentist, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026. He was 83 years old.

Jon was born in Ada, Oklahoma, on February 5, 1943, to Garland and Frances Hart. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, alongside his older sister Joan

He is survived by his beloved wife and pun partner Janice Schmoldt; his daughter Jamie Hart and her husband Bert Sowell; his son Brian Hart and his wife Heather Hart, along with grandchildren Jason and Sarah Hart; and his daughter in law Kristin Hart, along with grandchildren Bryce and Evan Hart.  Several nieces and nephews and a brother in law.  He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Terry Hart, son DJ Hart and sister Joan Grady, all of whom remained forever in his heart.

Jon pursued his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania and then his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh.  He then entered the service and was stationed at the Navy base in Jacksonville, Florida.  During his military service he fought many battles in the War Against Tooth Decay as he would humorously mention.

He moved to Hanover, PA, where he co-founded a dental practice with longtime partner Dr. J. William Greene.  For decades, alongside a staff he loved dearly, he provided compassionate dental care to the Hanover community. Known for his gentle touch and easy wit, his presence in the clinic brought genuine comfort and laughter to patients.

Jon’s commitment to helping others extended far beyond his practice. He lived by the values he learned as an Eagle Scout, dedicating his time to the community as a member of the South Western School Board and frequently volunteering his dental skills to those in need.

Outside of his professional life, Jon was a man of deep curiosity and simple pleasures. An avid reader and passionate historian, he could often be found exploring the Gettysburg battlefield on weekends, absorbing colonial history in Williamsburg, or tracing the landmarks of the Eastern Shore inspired by James Michener’s *Chesapeake*.

Jon was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. His favorite memories were made during camping trips to Assateague, relaxing on the beach at Ocean City, Maryland, and waking up before dawn on summer Saturdays to start the cooker for the legendary pig roasts. 

A mass and celebration will be held in Hanover, PA.  Details will be shared by the family at a later date.
