Fred N. Baker, 89, of New Oxford, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at The Brethren Home at Cross Keys Village.
Born August 23, 1932, in Abbottstown, PA, he was the son of the Lloyd W. and Bessie (Myers) Baker. He was the husband of Margaret V. (Stonesifer) Baker, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage until her death, March 31, 1988.
Fred was a 1952 graduate of East Berlin High School. He was a veteran, drafted into the United States Army in 1953, he served his country proudly. Before and after his military service, Fred could be found working at the golf course. He started as a caddy at the Hanover Country Club at the young age of 16 and worked his way up to earning the title of Golf Course Superintendent. He was employed at the Hanover Country Club, South Hills Golf Course, Charnita Golf Course, Carroll Valley Golf Course, and Mountainview Golf Course, which is where he retired from as Superintendent.
Fred was a member of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America for over fifty years, serving as President of the association in 1968. He was also a member of the American Legion.
In his spare time, Fred enjoyed cooking and “tinkering” with things. He enjoyed taking things apart and trying to put them back together.
Fred is survived by his daughters Karen L. Grim & her husband Charles, of Hanover, PA, and Lisa A. McMaster & husband Stephen, of Soldotna, AK, grandchildren, Patricia A. Grim of Hanover, PA, David M. Grim of Avon, CT, Ryan McMaster of Soldotna, AK, and Sara McMaster of Irvine, CA, great-grandchildren, Aubrey Black of Hanover, PA, Benjamin Grim and Nicholas Grim, both of Avon, CT.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember Fred’s life will be held 10 AM, Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA 17331, with Reverend Scott Sager officiating. A viewing and time to share memories of Fred’s life will be held 6-8PM, Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Marburg Memorial Gardens with a graveside committal service at 12PM, Thursday, September 2, 2021, with the Allied Veterans Honor Guard detail.
