Georgia Karageorge Mavros, 99, of Hanover, PA, entered into God’s eternal care on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center with her loving family by her side.
Born August 27, 1925, in Bradford, PA, she was the daughter of the late Aristidis and Polyxene (Exarchos) Karageorge. Georgia was the loving wife of the late Efthymios (Tim) Mavros, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage until his passing on July 12, 2000.
Georgia and Tim were the second-generation owners and operators of the Famous Hot Weiner Restaurant, 1 York Street, Hanover, PA, for 44 years. They were instrumental in helping their son, Nicholas T. Mavros and son-in-law Pete G. Keriazes to establish the Famous Hot Weiner North, 160 Dart Drive, Hanover, PA, in 1973.
Georgia was a dual member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camp Hill, PA, and a founding member at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, York, PA. She was a 75-year member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Cathedral, and received an honor from the Metropolis of Pittsburgh Diocese, and the Hanover YMCA Water Senior Aerobics Class in which she participated, and taught the class and substituted many times, honored her when she retired at age 86. A member of the Syllogos Neohoriton, of Harrisburg, PA, and the Platanos Society of New York, PA.
Georgia is survived by two daughters, Constance Dina Keriazes (Pete), Hanover, PA, and Pauline Katina Zozos (Dimitri), of Mechanicsburg, PA. She had eight grandchildren, Ellena Keriazes, George and Vicki Keriazes, Timothy and Denise Keriazes, of Hanover, Georgianna and Thomas Fraley, Delaware, Ohio; Penelope and Chris Rushton, Boston, Mass; Mia and George Makkas, Upper Arlington, Ohio; Rhea and Ike Karavangelos, Gaithersburg, MD; Alexander and Alexandra Zozos, Philadelphia PA.
Georgia was affectionately Mega-Yiayia by fourteen great-grandchildren; Peter and Maximos Griffiths; Kristina and Peter Keriazes; Zoe and Nicholas Fraley; Dean and Nikolas Rushton; Leo, Constantine, and Nicholas Makkas, Constantine, Katina, and Elliana Karavangelos…and expecting soon a baby Zozos, from Alexandra and Alexander Zozos.
She was preceded in death by one son, Nicholas T. Mavros and his wife Lona Mavros, and her siblings and their spouses: Evdoxia and Nicholas Hadgis, George and Antonia Karageorge, Maria and Peter Alexopoulos, and Katina Karageorge.
There will be a viewing on Thursday, March 20, from 5-7 pm at Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA 17331. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.kenworthyfh.com.
On Friday, March 21, 2025, there will also be a viewing from 10-11 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1000 Yverdon Drive, Camp Hill, PA 17011. Funeral Services at Holy Trinity will follow the viewing on Friday.
