Harold L. Hartlaub Obituary

After enjoying a fulfilling life as a business owner, community leader, philanthropist, husband and father, Harold Hartlaub entered into rest on June 28, 2025. For 71 years he was married to Delores (Flemmens) Hartlaub, who passed in 2023. Born January 29, 1930, Harold was the son of the late Gerald C. and Hilda M. (Martz) Hartlaub. He will be missed by Sherry and Gary Holtzman, his daughter and son-in-law; Shirley Humbert, his sister; and his care assistants. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Burnell, Earl, and Gerald, and his sister, Kathleen Palmer.

Harold was a 1947 graduate of Eichelberger Senior High School where he participated in wrestling and football. He also became certified to teach woodworking and cabinet making to WWII veterans at Hanover High School.

After graduation, Harold began his career as a business owner of Hartlaub Furniture Company, which manufactured furniture frames, with his father and brother. In 1956 Hartlaub Leg Company was created to manufacture legs and wood turnings for furniture.

Harold served with the Army in Korea, where he received an accommodation ribbon, two battle stars, and achieved the rank of sergeant.

Two other businesses that Harold started came from his passion for racing motorcycles both locally and along the east coast. He and a partner opened the first Honda motorcycle dealership in the area in 1960—A & H Cycle Company, which later expanded to include sales of motorcycle accessories nationwide. Harold opened his second motorcycle dealership, Lyn-De Honda, in York, in 1965 which also became the first area location for Honda automobiles in 1970.  As a result of those successes, Harold and Delores were able to travel as guests of Honda Motor Company to numerous destinations--Japan and Hawaii were their favorites.

Harold was involved with the Boy Scouts most of his life, becoming an Eagle Scout at age 16 and later, serving as a member of their Board of Directors. During that time, he led a successful fund-raising drive for improvements to Camp Tuckahoe.

Harold was a member and former chairman of the board of directors at Hanover Hospital for 31 years. During that time, he was instrumental in starting one of the hospital’s greatest traditions, the Hanover Hospital annual golf benefit that has raised more than $3.5 million over 25 years.

He loved golfing at the Hanover Country Club, where he was a life member, served nine years on the Board, and was a two-year past president. During the winter months for more than 20 years, Harold and Delores resided and golfed in Florida at The Vines Country Club in Estero, and then moved to Shadow Wood Country Club in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Harold, who had his private pilot’s license with a multi-engine rating, loved taking family and friends on many excursions to destinations in the eastern United States. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing trips.

Harold was a member of Grace United Church of Christ and served on the church council for 25 years. He also served as a bank director at Farmers Bank & Trust Co. for 25 years. Harold was a member of the Hanover Lions Club for 35+ years, the Elks, VFW, American Legion, and Ducks Unlimited.

He has been a West Manheim Township supervisor since 2010; chairman 10 of those years.

The family will be forever grateful to Harold’s personal care assistants—you are truly special people who showed so much kindness, patience, and compassion to him.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you celebrate Harold by donating time to your passions in life.
