James Greene Obituary

James Edward Greene, 84, of Hanover, PA, entered God's Eternal Care on June 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December

28, 1941, in Sneedville, TN, he was the son of the late Burkette and Laura (Ferguson) Greene. He was a member of Briar Creek Baptist Church, having been baptized at an early age. James was the beloved husband of the late Lena L. (Dooley) Greene, with whom he shared 56 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2020.

James graduated from Hancock County High School in 1959. Shortly after, he enlisted and served in the Armed Forces from 1961 to 1963, where he was honorably discharged. James held multiple jobs throughout his life but retired from Lion Brothers, a niche emblem manufacturer, after 20 years of dedicated service as a Machine Operator.

James possessed a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. His family especially treasured his gift for storytelling, as he brought to life stories of his childhood in the mountains of Tennessee, sharing not only memories but the lessons, humor, and resilience that shaped him.  He loved making people laugh, enjoyed hearing stories about his children and grandchildren, and found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors, gardening, fishing, hunting, taking walks, and going on scenic drives. He also held a lifelong love of learning, a passion for reading, and particularly loved all things science-related. He had a naturally curious mind and instilled in his children a love of learning, thoughtful conversation, and open curiosity.

Above all else, James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was the center of his life, and nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with those he loved. He was a man of unwavering integrity and moral conviction. Through his words and, more importantly, through his example, he taught his children honesty, responsibility, kindness, and the importance of living a life of character. His greatest legacy was not found in accomplishments or possessions, but in the values he passed on. He raised his family with love, patience, and quiet strength, leaving an enduring example of what it means to be a good man, a loving father, and a faithful provider. The family finds comfort in knowing that James and Lena are together once again after six years apart.

James is survived by his loving children, James E. Greene, Jr. and his wife Vera of Westminster, MD, and Sharon A. Redmond of Cooksville, MD; five cherished grandchildren, Timothy Greene, Brooke A. Redmond, Mindy Greene, Brandon Redmond, and Tyler Redmond; two beloved great-grandchildren, Brantley and Ava Greene; his brother, Everette Greene; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his beloved wife, Lena, he was preceded in death by his parents, Burkette and Laura Greene; his brother, Norman Greene; his sister, Ina Mae (Greene) and brother-in-law Bill Dooley; and his sister, Agnes (Greene) and brother-in-law Charles Johnson. [1]

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians and nurses who cared for James during his illness, and to everyone who has offered prayers, kindness, and support during this difficult time. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that James' greatest lessons—to love your family deeply, live with integrity, remain curious, laugh often, and always find joy in life's simple pleasures—will continue to guide our family for generations to come.

The immediate family will hold a private funeral service to celebrate and remember James on July 2, 2026, with the Rev. Scott A. Sager officiating.
