John J. Gyenes Obituary

John J. Gyenes, 87, of East Berlin, PA, and formerly of Hanover, PA, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 12, 1939, in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Gabriel and Catherine (Ochman) Gyenes. John was the loving husband of the late Margaret A. (Fogle) Gyenes, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage until her passing on November 27, 2013.

John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, PA.

He was a 1957 graduate of Somerville High School in Somerville, NJ, and a 1960 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Following graduation, John spent five years serving in the United States Merchant Marine before beginning a distinguished 40-year career as an engineer with Worthington Pumps, retiring in 2003.

John was deeply devoted to his family, his faith, and a life of service and accomplishment. He was a loving and devoted husband to Margaret, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage and built a life centered on love, family, faith, and countless cherished memories. Above all else, John took tremendous pride in his children and grandchildren and treasured the time he spent with those he loved. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, faced the many challenges of life with quiet strength, dignity, and perseverance. His deep Catholic faith, his years of service through the Knights of Columbus, and his unwavering love for his family were central to the man he was and the legacy he leaves behind.

John was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 871 in Hanover, PA, and the Maine Maritime Academy Alumni Association.

John is survived by his sons, Scott Gyenes and his wife, Jennifer, of East Berlin, PA, and Mark Gyenes and his wife, Karen, of Madawaska, ME; five grandchildren, Connor Gyenes, Sophia Gyenes, Maddie Gyenes, Patrick Gyenes, and Brendan Gyenes; and Bonnie Gyenes, mother of his grandchildren Connor, Sophia, and Maddie.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret; his brother, Gabriel “Gubby” Gyenes; and his sister, Catherine Gyenes.

Following cremation, a private graveside service will be held with family, with Father Samuel Miller officiating.
