Josephine Irene Miller, 82, of Hanover, died peacefully on January 19, 2022, while in hospice care and surrounded by loved ones at her daughter’s home.
Born in Hanover in 1939, Josie was the daughter of the late Lena Catherine Snyder. She grew up on a farm that is now under Lake Marburg and graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1956.
Josie met Walter Cornell Miller at a church picnic; they married in August 1957. Together, they built the home that she lived in for the rest of her life and the family that she loved with all of her heart.
Josie and Walter were members of two local square-dancing clubs, the Cannonaders in Gettysburg and the Pacers in Hanover. She worked as a medical secretary for several local family physicians, including Dr. Mark Redding Jr., Dr. Ralph Bittinger, Dr. Michael Steelman and Dr. Kurt Thomas, and for a time in the medical records department of Hanover Hospital.
Josie loved reading and attending plays and concerts. She was a longtime member of Bethel UCC in Spring Grove and served for a time on the church consistory. For many decades, she hosted family dinners on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. One specialty was New Year’s hog maw, and it can be said without fear of contradiction that Josie’s hog maw was the best in the known universe.
Josie is survived by her husband, Walter, a son Timothy and wife Teresa, a daughter Elizabeth and husband Erik Arneson, and grandchildren Alex and Sarah.
