Jude T. Smith

Jude T. Smith, 86, passed away peacefully, Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born September 20, 1937, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Francis (Ike) E. and Agnes G. (Murren) Smith.  Jude was the loving husband of the late Janet S. (Groft) Smith with whom he shared 56 years of marriage until her passing on December 8, 2016.

Jude was a 1955 graduate of Delone Catholic High School and received his B.S. in Education from Shippensburg State College in 1962, and later a master’s degree.

Jude was a Social Studies teacher in the Gettysburg School District for 30 years until his retirement.  During his career he also coached football, girls’ track, and girls’ basketball and worked as the Athletic Director.  He refereed basketball and youth football for many years.

Jude was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served his country proudly from 1956 to 1958.

Jude was a member of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown, PA and a former member of the McSherrystown Home Association and the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus.

Jude was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.  He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Colts and Ravens as well as  Notre Dame.  He always enjoyed the Christmas season and looked forward to family beach vacations.

Jude is survived by his three children, Dave Smith and his wife, Robin of Hanover, Lori Overmoyer and her husband, Donald of New Oxford, and Tracy Moorhead and her husband, Rich of Hanover; seven grandchildren, Jesse Smith and his wife, Caroline, Emily Snyder and husband Drew, Madeline and Charles Overmoyer, and Genevieve, Scott and Lily Moorhead; four great grandchildren, Maeve Smith, Landon Snyder, Layla Smith, and Lincoln Snyder; and one sister, Kathleen (Kay) Hartlaub of McSherrystown, PA. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Stephanie.

Following cremation, the family will receive friends and share memories from 6-8 PM, Friday, October 13, 2023, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Annunciation Catholic Church Cemetery, McSherrystown, PA.
