Madeline L. Mitchell

Madeline L. (Madge) Mitchell, 95, of Hanover, PA, entered God's eternal care on July 19, 2022 at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.

Born March 24, 1927 in Hanover, PA, she was the daughter of the late Luke W. and Naomi H. Rohrbaugh.  Madeline was the loving wife of the late Guy M. Mitchell, Jr. with whom she shared 58 years of marriage until his passing on June 18, 2013.

Mrs. Mitchell was a 1945 graduate of Eichelberger High School and a 1948 graduate of the Pennsylvania State College.  She was a former substitute teacher in Hanover and South Western School Districts, and teacher at Trinity U.C.C. Nursery School.

Madeline was a life-long member of Trinity United Church of Christ, and a member of Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of American Revolution, Alpha Xi Delta, and Hanover Garden Club. 

Madge enjoyed golfing and swimming at Hanover Country Club, where she was first introduced to her husband, Guy. Walking on the beaches at Fenwick Island, Delaware, and playing bridge with friends on Long Island, Maine, were other favorite activities.  The proud leader of three generations of Penn State grads, Madge enjoyed tailgating at many Penn State football games. She was always knitting baby caps for newborns at the Hanover Hospital or sweaters for a loved one. While active in all these ways, Madge always made spending time with her family her number one priority and source of happiness.

Madeline is survived by her children, Susan Mitchell and husband Jim Sygitowicz (Prescott, AZ), Jane Pianovich and husband Paul Pianovich (Lykens, PA), Richard Mitchell (New York, NY), two grandsons, Alex Pianovich and Stephen Pianovich, her sister, Jean Palmer, and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Rohrbaugh and sister, Gladys Brown.

A celebration of life will be held 11 AM, Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 116 York Street, Hanover, PA 17331. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Madeline to a charity of your choice.
