Phyllis L. "Sally" Smith

Phyllis L. “Sally” Smith, 91, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Monday, May 12, 2025, at Homewood at Plum Creek, Hanover, PA, with her loving family by her side.

Born September 28, 1933, in Hanover, PA, she was the daughter of the late Bernard F. and Neomi P. (Slagle) Smith.  Sally was the loving wife of the late Joseph F. Smith, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage until his passing on November 11, 2017.

Sally was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica where she was previously a healthcare minister, council member, and librarian for the school library.

Sally was a 1951 graduate of Delone Catholic High School.  She held various jobs over the years, working at her parents’ restaurant, the Victory, Utz Quality Foods, Colonial Crest Apartments, the Evening Sun, and being a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Joseph F. Smith Trucking and Excavating.

Sally was a Girl Scout Troop Leader and served many capacities within Girl Scouts for many years.  She also volunteered with the Hanover Literacy Guild and was a member of the local and national A.A.R.P.

Sally loved reading and doing crafts and especially spending time with her friends and her family.

Sally is survived by her children, Lorrine J. Owen and companion Joseph Breighner of Rockville, MD, Sueanne M. Senft and husband Patrick of New Oxford, Brenda J. Flaherty and husband Thomas of Hanover, Patricia S. Gustafson and husband William of Gettysburg, Melanie K. Staub and husband Michael of Hanover, and Jennifer A. Talaber of Wesley Chapel, FL; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Anthony L. Smith of York, PA; and two sisters, Nancy M. Allen of Yoe, PA, and Barbara A. Fancher of Chestertown, MD.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald F. Smith and a sister, Nadine E. Potts.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and remember Sally will be held 11AM, Monday, May 19, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, with Father Dwight Schlaline as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Hanover.  Visitation and time to share memories with the family will be held from 5-7PM, Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, with a prayer service at 7PM.

Serving as casketbearers will be Ryan Zeigler, Daniel Senft, Christine Wrubel, Maggie Keester, Mark Owen, Emily Owen, Stephanie Owen, Evan Staub, and Ellen Noel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Sally to the Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA 17331.
