Richard S. Harner, 95, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Monday, July 29, 2024, at home with his loving family by his side.
Born August 14, 1928, in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late Elder and Norma V. (Bish) Harner. He was the loving husband of Darlene M. (Alwood) Harner with whom he shared fifteen years of marriage, and the late Patricia (Neiderer) Harner, who died November 11, 2008.
Richard was a veteran of World War II, serving his country proudly in the United States Army, and earning a WWII Victory Medal, an Army of Occupation Medal-Japan, and Lapel Button.
Richard was a graduate of the University of Maryland, and received his PhD from American University, Washington, D.C. He was employed by NASA as a physicist until his retirement.
Richard was a member of the VFW Post 2506, Hanover, PA, the Western York County Democratic Club, and the York County Democratic Party.
Richard enjoyed painting and reading, he loved science and model trains, and he played the banjo, mandolin and guitar.
In addition to his loving wife Darlene, Richard is survived by his children, Sandy Hagerty and husband Les of Hanover, PA, Susan Shim and husband Eric of Annapolis, MD, John Harner and wife Susan of FL, and Steve Harner and wife Kathy of Glen Rock, PA; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One daughter-in-law, Sara Jenson, Georgia. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Harner.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember Richard will be held 2:00PM, Friday, August 2, 2024, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, with Deacon Tom Aumen officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, PA. A visitation and time to share memories with the family will be from 1:00-2:00PM, Friday, August 2, 2024, at the funeral home. The Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard Burial Detail will provide Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to the ASPCA 520 8th Ave, 7th Floor, New York , NY 10018 or to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
