Born November 17, 1944, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Richard W. Sr. and Mary J. (Baumgardner) Bentzel. He was the loving husband to Patricia Ann (Miller) Bentzel with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Richard was a 1962 graduate of South West High School. He was a veteran and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Richard worked as a machinist at Caterpillar for over 30 years until his retirement in September of 1998.
Richard was a member of Christ's American Baptist Church in Spring Grove, PA. Over the years he enjoyed quiet times listening to his favorite gospel music. He also enjoyed designing and personalizing greeting cards, traveling on long car rides through the mountains with his family, target shooting and hunting – and when he could no longer hunt he looked so forward to hearing the hunting stories from both his sons when they got done hunting at the end of the day.
In addition to his wife Patricia, Richard is survived by two children, Steve Bentzel and wife Casie of Abbottstown, PA, and Neil Bentzel and wife Sally of Hanover, PA. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry West, and his sister Carole Diehl.
