Shirley J. Garrett, 86, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Saturday, January 23, 2021 at her home with her loving family by her side.
Born March 15, 1934 in Glen Rock, PA, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Frances A. (Bortner) Krebs. Shirley was the loving wife of the late G. Richard Garrett who died March 17, 2000 and with whom she shared forty-five years of marriage.
Shirley was a member of St. David’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA, where she was involved with WELCA, meals for shut-ins, gardening, building improvements, and working as custodian.
Shirley was a 1952 graduate of Eichelberger High School. She worked for Fischer’s Stationary Store from 1975-1983, and Hanover Direct until her retirement in 1996. After retirement she went back to work as a custodian at St. David’s Evangelical Lutheran Church from 2000-2019 and worked in the South Western School District food services from 2006-2015. She was an Avon rep. for thirteen years and was a member of their President’s Club.
Shirley enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, working on puzzles, and sewing as the family seamstress. She especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her children, Karen A. Tregoning and her significant other Joseph A. Strausbaugh of Hanover, PA; and Thomas R. Garrett and his wife Karen of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Chad Garrett and wife Melodie, Jessica Robison and her husband Lance; and Jazmin Gowran and her husband James (TJ); great-grandchildren, Makayla Ball, Trista Ball, Reagan Garrett, Sydney & Luke Robison, and Camden Gowran; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Garrett, Hanover, PA; she is also survived by her “adopted” grandchildren, Barbara Williams and her husband Jerry, and Christopher Strausbaugh; and her “adopted” great-grandchildren, Alex, Nathan, and Matthew Williams.
A graveside service will be held 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at St. David’s Church Cemetery, Baltimore Pike, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. LaDonna Thomas officiating. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, masks will be required, social distancing observed, and attendance inside may be limited.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Garrett, Lance Robison, James Gowran, Jerry Williams, Mike Stevens, and Eric Tregoning.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to the St. David’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1032 Musselman Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
