Steven C. Gilbert Obituary

Steven C. “Stevie” Gilbert, 66, of Abbottstown, PA, passed away at UPMC Hanover on July 30, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer for 3 years, with his loving family beside him.

Stevie was the loving husband of Sherrie L. (Kreeger) Gilbert.  Together they would have shared 39 years of marriage on September 14th, 2026.  They shared 7 years together before they got married.

Steve was born on December 27, 1959, and was the son of the late Wilbur and Ethel (Markle) Gilbert.  He is survived by two brothers, David Gilbert and wife Vickie of Gettysburg, PA, and Samuel Gilbert and wife Diane of Wellsboro, PA; a sister-in-law, Linda Gilbert; 4 nieces and nephews, Greg Gilbert, Melissa Gilbert, Chris Gilbert, and Ryan Gilbert; 2 step-nephews, Bradley Brewer and Dustin Brewer; and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Gilbert; and a nephew, Justin Gilbert.

Steve was employed at Alwine Brickyard, New Oxford, until they closed the plant.  From there he went to work at Leister’s Furniture Company for 33 years until they closed the plant.  He then had to retire because of his cancer.

Steve loved playing cards and poker with family and friends, especially with his late mother and uncle Archie Markle.  He loved the Chicago Bears Football Team and he was king of the TV remote.  He loved all animals and especially his fur babies, Tommy, Lacey, Peanie, Maisey and Buttons.  He hoped to see and play ball again in Heaven with his dogs Teddy Bear and Max whom he adored. He especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Henke, MD, whom he thought very much of.  Also, we would like to thank Dr. Sabrina Martyr, MD and the staff at Hillman Cancer Center, the staff at UPMC Hanover who took care of him, also the VNA of Hanover & Spring Grove.

There will be no viewing, Cremation will follow with the family celebrating Steve’s life at a later date.
