Susan Greenawalt Frey (“Sue”), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted community servant, was born on June 20, 1947, in Evanston, Illinois, and passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026.
Sue was the daughter of Guy and Virginia Greenawalt of Evanston, Illinois. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Daniel M. Frey; her two sons, Daniel C. Frey and wife Sandy of Jacksonville, Florida and Jeremy D. Frey and Angie of Hanover, Pennsylvania; her sister, Mary Dunbar and husband Jeff of Pittsburgh; and her brother, Guy Andrew Greenawalt and wife Janice of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. She was predeceased by her sister, Anne Ericson. Known affectionately as “Nanny,” Sue was a cherished grandmother to McKenzie Frey, Alexandria Frey, Caroline Frey, Kaitlyn Frey, and Luke Frey, each of whom brought her immense joy.
Sue was a proud graduate of New Trier High School in Wilmette, Illinois. She earned a degree in History from Dickinson College where she was a Pi Beta Phi. Sue was a lover of history and delighted in understanding the world through its past, which led her and Dan to explore America and beyond. Later, Sue continued her education at York College, and became a CPA, a testament to her curiosity, discipline, and commitment to the community. She worked as a CPA for Stambaugh Ness and SEK. She also was an adjunct professor of accounting at York College. For more than 50 years, Sue devoted herself to the Hanover community. She served with distinction in numerous leadership and treasurer roles, including the Visiting Nurse Association of Spring Grove, Hanover Area Historical Society, Hanover Public Library Association, the Vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church, the Board of Governors of the Hanover Public Library, and the President of the Friends of the Library. Her competence, integrity, and generosity left an enduring mark on each organization she served.
Sue found deep joy in gardening and spent a lifetime nurturing beauty from the soil. She could almost always be found planting something new or tending lovingly to her flowers. Her garden was a sight to behold! She also loved to travel—especially to England, her favorite destination. After returning home, she was delighted in creating and “publishing” photo books to commemorate her journeys, preserving memories for herself and her family.
Sue was a beautiful light in this world—kind, thoughtful, and deeply engaged in the lives of those around her. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the Visiting Angels, Chris Kollman, Homewood Care South, and the VNA for caring for Sue. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 10AM, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 890 McCosh Street, Hanover, with a service to follow at 11AM with Rev. Carenda Baker officiating. A committal will immediately follow at St. Joseph’s Church Cemetery, South High Street, Hanover. A reception will follow the committal at Highland Taps and Tables. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the 2026 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in honor of Sue at act.alz.org/goto/Frey or The Friends of the Library (Guthrie Memorial) 2 Library Place, Hanover.
