Thomas E. Fissel, 94, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care on Thursday, January 4, 2024. Born in Hanover, PA on November 19, 1929, to Dorothy and Earl Fissel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Fissel in 2003. He is survived by his brother, Edward Fissel of Timonium, MD, and four children, William Fissel of Ashburn, VA, David Fissel of Arlington, VA, Nancy Fissel Rathell of Glenville, PA, and James Fissel of Marfa, TX. He had nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
After graduating Hanover High School in 1947, he began a 38-year career at New Way Packaging. He started as a machine shop apprentice and advanced to drill press operator, blueprint operator, draftsman, designer, engineering manager, and finally to Vice President of Engineering in 1975. His career was briefly interrupted by his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1948. A job change to Elsner Engineering Works completed his engineering career when he retired in 1995. During his career, he received numerous patents in automated packaging and paper conversion technologies. In the early 70’s, his interest in alternative wind energy and energy conservation led to numerous unique innovations around his home. His determination and inventive mind became a role model for his children as they pursued their professional careers.
Tom taught Low Impact Aerobics classes at Homewood at Plum Creek for 13 years, up until he was 90 years old. His loyal students have recognized his commitment to everyone’s health and well-being. His diverse collection of exercise music such as classical, polka, patriotic, and country kept the energy level up.
He had been a member of the Homewood Resident’s Association, and active at many talent shows and special events in the community. He was a lifetime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover Eagle Fire Co. #2, Porters Fire Department, Amvets Post #22, Patmos Masonic Lodge #348 and Hanover Elks Lodge. Volunteer activities included Meals on Wheels, PAL-Provide a Lunch Program, the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, and being a 4 gallon blood donor. Other memberships included the Hanover Kiwanis Club, Hanover Republican Club, Heidelberg Township Planning Commission, Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Hanover Area Industrial Management Club. He was active in scouting, first as a cubmaster and later as the York County scouting recruiter. He helped inaugurate the Junior Achievement program in the Hanover Area. His interests included baseball, softball and sailing. He played baseball in the 40’s for 1st Ward Team, American Legion, Hanover Moose and finally for Brushtown Bulldogs in the South Penn League. He played softball for Hanover Amvets, Hanover Wood Heel Dodgers Team and managed softball for St. Matthew’s church league. His sailing interest started in the 70’s at Lake Marburg. He competed in sailing races there and on the Chesapeake Bay.
A visitation and time to share memories with the family will be held from 10-11AM, Thursday, January 11, 2024, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA. A memorial service to celebrate and remember Thomas will be held 11AM, Thursday, January 11, 2024, with Rev. Faye Snyder officiating at the church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
