Virgil D. Loss Obituary

Virgil D. Loss, 98, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Hanover Hall Nursing & Rehab, Hanover, PA.

Born June 29, 1927, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Virgil E. and Lottie (Baughman) Loss.  Virgil was the loving husband of the late Margaret D. (Reichart) Loss, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage until her passing on December 2, 2013. 

Virgil was a life member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA.

Virgil was a veteran and served his country proudly in the United States Army. He was in the last group of men drafted from Hanover for WWII, and trained at Ft. McClellan, AL, was sent to the Panama Canal, and served in the 33rd Infantry Combat Team, and then in the 45th Mechanized Division, and was Honorably Discharged in 1947.

Virgil was an inspector with ESAB, Hanover, PA, for forty years until his retirement in 1990.

Family and Church were most important in Virgil's life. Following retirement, he enjoyed traveling with friends, and family vacations to Myrtle Beach. Virgil was an avid dirt-track race fan, was a former car owner, and worked at Lincoln Speedway and Williams Grove Speedway for over 30 years.

Virgil is survived by three children; Michael D. Loss and wife Patricia, David E. Loss and wife Brenda, and Tina L. Groft and husband Steve all of Hanover, PA, eleven grandchildren; Melissa Jacobs, Jill Loss Baughman, Christopher Loss, Jason Loss, Jennifer Loss, Justin Lawrence, Tyler Lawrence, Sara Lawrence Haring, Daniel Herfel, Rachael Groft, and Steven Groft, Jr., thirteen great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristie L. Loss and one sister, Doris Miller.

A funeral service to celebrate Virgil's life will be held at 11AM, Thursday, October 30, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA, with Rev. Dr. Daniel Yeiser officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, PA, with the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing Military Honors.  Viewings and time to share memories with the family will be held from 5-8PM, Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, as well as from 10-11AM, Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the church.
