Walter J. Porowski

Walter J. Porowski, 75, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Saturday, March 9, 2024, at WellSpan York Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Born February 19, 1949, in Johnstown, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Helen V. (Zieminski) Porowski.  Walt was the loving husband of Judith (Barnes) Porowski, with whom he shared fifty-two years of marriage.

Walt was a veteran and served his country proudly in the United States Army Reserves.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the AMVETS Post #22, the BPO Elks Lodge #763, and South Hills Golf Course.

Walt was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and with social ministry.

Walt was a 1966 graduate of Bishop McCort High School, Johnstown, PA, and a 1970 graduate of Shippensburg University with a master’s in education.  Mr. Porowski taught eighth grade English at South Western EHMIS for thirty-four years until his retirement in 2004.

Walt loved golf and his golfing buddies.  He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife, Judy, Walt is survived by his son, Russell Porowski and wife Nancy of Cherry Hill, NJ; three grandchildren, Ben, Hanna, and Emma Porowski; a brother, Don Porowski and wife Mary, of  South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Nancy Porowski of Hanover, PA;   and two nieces Courtney Kurtz of Lancaster, PA, and Dawn McMaster of Hanover, PA.               .  He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Porowski.

 A funeral service to celebrate and remember Walt will be held 11AM, Friday, March 15, 2024, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA, with Rev. Dr. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman officiating.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.   Viewings and times to share memories with the family will be held from 6-8PM, Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., and from 10-11AM, Friday, March 15, 2024, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made in Walt’s memory to South Western School District Dollars for Scholars, C/O Jeff Mummert, 225 Bowman Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
