William Wright Smith, 87, of Hanover, PA, entered God's eternal care, Saturday, May 29, 2021, at the Hanover Hall Nursing Home, Hanover, PA.
Born December 24, 1933, in Youngstown, OH, he was the son of the late John F. and Helen G. (Wright) Smith. William was the loving husband of Carol L. (Dahler) Smith with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
William was a veteran and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earning the National Defense Service Medal.
William was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA, having served on the church council, and was former chairman of the Property Committee. He was a member of the Reisterstown Lions Club, earning the Melvin Jones Award for 20 years, and a charter member of the Valley Lions Club in Pleasant Valley, MD and together he had 40 years of perfect attendance. He helped form the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company and served as their 1st President.
William was a 1951 graduate of Towson High School, Towson, MD, and a 1959 graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Agriculture, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, and the Alpha Theta Chapter of the National Agriculture Fraternity. He was the owner and operator of W & W Landscaping, Inc. for 43 years until his retirement in 2002.
William enjoyed spending time with his family, community service, being outdoors and landscaping.
In addition to his loving wife, Carol, William is survived by his children, LTC(Ret) William H. Smith and wife Margaret of Chesterfield, VA, John H. Smith and wife Stephanie of Lovettsville, VA, and Holly R. Mann of Hanover, PA; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Eleanor J. Eckman of Lutherville, MD, and Robert E. Smith of Shrewsbury, PA. He was preceded in death by a brother, John F. Smith, Jr. and a granddaughter.
Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. Dr. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Westminster, MD. A visitation and time to share memories with the family will be held from 1:00-2:00pm, Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the funeral home.
