William Van Sant Obituary

William Butler Van Sant entered God’s eternal care on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, in Hanover, PA.

He was born on February 22, 1924 in Elkton, MD. William was the son of the late William W. and Margaret M. (Butler) Van Sant.  He was the loving husband of the late Marjorie A. (Lehman) Van Sant who died August 29, 2020 and with whom he shared 74 years of marriage.

William was a veteran of the United States Navy.  He joined the Navy in the summer of 1941 and served in the South Pacific during WWII and spent the next 23 years serving his country before retiring as a QMCS.  He then became a civilian employee of the Department of the Navy until his retirement in 1989.  He founded the Sea Scouts Troop in New Carrollton, MD, was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Grand High Priests of Maryland, a Grand Commander of Knights Templars of Maryland in 1979, and a member of the Boumi Temple. 

William was an avid cabinet maker and golfer, and after retiring he and his wife travelled extensively throughout North America and Europe.

William is survived by his daughters Jane Browning and husband R. Getty, III of Abbottstown, Pa and Christine Campbell and husband Hamer of Columbia, Md, four granddaughters, Suzanne Campbell, Amanda Campbell Salveron and husband Brian, Marjorie Browning Toohey, and Elizabeth Browning; four great grandchildren, Sean Campbell, Grace Salveron, Greyson Toohey, and McKenna Toohey; a brother, James E. Van Sant of Tempe, AZ; and one sister, Deneen Achenbach of Takoma Park, MD.  He was preceded in death by a sister Margaret Dungan of Waynesboro, VA.

William’s cremains and his late wife Marjorie’s will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
